19 July 2006

On the 17th, I woke up and fixed myself a ham and cheese omelet. I’ve missed cooking my own food and being able to eat when and what I want. Of course, I don’t want to insult Mercedes’ and Chonita’s cooking because it was great and it was nice to not have to worry about finding ingredients or anything in a different country. But, now that I’m home, I want to cook again. I’m sure my parents won’t mind.

Then, Hugo, the same taxi driver that picked me up from Antigua, picked me up at 10 and took me around Guatemala City. I saw the traje museum. It was interesting and there was a lot of information about the changes in materials but I was hoping for more exhibits of the traje from all over the country. That alone, though, would take up many rooms. We then went to see the national palace and had a short tour, visiting just the main rooms. They didn’t allow us to roam about, which I guess was probably justified. Then we went to the market for a bit and headed back to the center. Hugo accompanied me the whole time. It was nice to know I had a body guard and I felt very secure.

For dinner that night and breakfast the next morning, again, I made myself an omelet. I didn’t want to steal too much of Diana’s food so I tried to keep it minimal. Tuesday morning, I ate and finished packing pretty early so I decided to waste my left over time playing on the internet until Hugo picked me up at 10:30 for my 1:15 flight. It was a long day of travel—2 hours in the airport, 3 flying, 3 in the airport and 2 more flying—but I finally got home without any trouble.

I can’t believe how lucky I’ve been on this trip. I only got really sick once and only for a day or so. I never got mugged or lost my passport or any significant amount of money. My mom is trying to emphasize that I won’t always be this lucky but I still don’t think that’s going to deter me from traveling more (sorry, Mom).  I’d do this project again in a heartbeat, despite all the problems that could have occurred and all the poverty I’d have to see again.
