Today Amanda came at 7 to discuss the projects in Santiago and how she can help out. It will be wonderful to have her in Santiago keeping track of everything. Another friend Heather came by to ask advice about a project she is working on. We decided she would come to Guatemala City Thursday night so we would have more time to visit about it.

Domingo was taking us back to the city so we packed up everything, said our goodbyes and left about 9:30. We had thought we were taking the Pan American highway back, but Domingo decided to take the mountain road too. Now as my friends Peggy and Vikki can attest too, Domingo is quite the driver... The trip was interesting to say the least and I only thought it was the end 2 times. This is an improvement over the last time I rode with him.

Sara and I had been craving Pollo Camparo... A chicken restaurant that is a chain and all over Guatemala, so we stopped in Antiqua on the way back for that. Sara and I also wanted to get some clay flower pots, soil and plants for the patio here at the office. Domingo was very patient with us as we shopped and bought a van load of plants etc. We arrived at the office at about 3 and Virginia was here waiting to work. I thought she wasn't coming in. We unpacked the car and I worked with her for about 2 hours. I had thought I would be able to relax from now on out but several things happened to kill that thought. I was going to pack up bags to go back to the states when I discovered that all the jewelry we had bought from Chonita's was missing. Neither Sara nor I remembered taking it out of the van... so in panic we called Domingo to look in the van for it. All I could thing of was that he had taken it out of the van when we bought the plants and had left it by the side of the road. This was $2500.00 worth of jewelry so quite a concern. Domingo was still in town, in fact buying the typewriters so he looked and sure enough it was still in the van, hidden behind a seat. This was a relief.

Mean while we had another crisis. Angie from Casa Guatemala (the orphanage in the jungle we support) and I were going to get together on Thursday. I called her and she said she had been trying to get a hold of me the past several days. She had been sending me e-mails. She said the water had been rising on the Rio Dulce because of all the rain and the orphanage was flooded. My heart sank...this was a reminder of several years ago when the orphanage was destroyed by an earth quake. She said the generator wasn't working, the sewer pipes had broken and they were in a state of emergency. Of course they needed money quickly.

I e-mailed the Sharing the Dream board. Did some work on our finances and called Vikki in the states to transfer some money. I worked all evening and was able to come up with $10,000.00. Most of our other projects that I had discussed in the previous e-mails would have to wait a few months.

Hopefully all the people who sell products for Sharing the Dream can see that what they are doing is so.....important. Click here to learn more about the flooding.
